Reported speech

To report what someone said, use dire que, expliquer que or demander si, and change the pronouns: je suis fatigué becomes il dit qu'il est fatigué.

When the reporting verb is in the past, the tenses move back: the present becomes the imparfait, the passé composé becomes the plus-que-parfait, and the future becomes the conditional: il a dit qu'il viendrait.

A yes or no question becomes si, and si becomes s' before il: il demande s'il peut partir. Qu'est-ce que becomes ce que: elle demande ce que tu veux.
