Modal particles

Modal particles colour a sentence without adding facts: doch, ja, eben, mal, halt, wohl, eigentlich. They stand in the middle of the clause and cannot be translated word for word.

Doch contradicts or urges: Komm doch mit! Das ist doch nicht wahr! Ja signals shared knowledge: Das ist ja interessant. Mal softens a request: Kannst du mir mal helfen?

Eben and halt accept a situation: Dann bleibe ich eben zu Hause. Wohl marks a guess: Er ist wohl krank.
