Formal style

Formal and written German prefers nouns to verbs: Wir bitten um Ihr Verständnis instead of Bitte verstehen Sie das, and Nach Abschluss der Arbeiten instead of Nachdem die Arbeiten abgeschlossen sind.

Typical are verb and noun phrases with a weak verb: eine Entscheidung treffen, in Betracht ziehen, zur Verfügung stellen, Rücksicht nehmen.

Use them in letters, reports and exams: they sound neutral and precise. In speech the simple verb is more natural: entscheiden instead of eine Entscheidung treffen.
