German grammar C1 · Lesson 2 of 4

Participles before nouns

German can pack a clause into a participle before a noun: (the book that was read), (the running engine). Present participles end in , past participles in or .

The participle takes the adjective endings: , .

The extended form puts a whole phrase between the article and the noun, a habit of formal writing: means the tasks that were corrected by the teacher.

Examples

  • Das gelesene Buch liegt auf dem Tisch.
  • Der laufende Motor macht Lärm.
  • Die geschlossenen Fenster halten die Kälte ab.
  • Ein überraschender Erfolg freute das Team.
